Silicone nanofilaments grown on aircraft alloys for low ice adhesion

چکیده
Abstract Many novel icephobic coatings have been shown to exhibit low adhesion strength ice grown at null or velocity. Of these, few also by impacting high velocity supercooled water droplets. Even fewer of these over a range environmental conditions. Those that such behavior held back their susceptibility certain bands UV-exposure. Here, made from Silicone Nanofilament (SNF) networks on anodic metal oxide surfaces are presented. They show for impact icing conditions and good durability against the tested Additionally, nano-porous structure provides enhanced lubricant retention when infused with oil. The described promising candidate supporting hybrid protection systems aircraft, thereby reducing energy needed anti?/de-icing.

Room Temperature Characteristics of Polymer-Based Low Ice Adhesion Surfaces
Ice adhesion is mainly dictated by surface properties, and water wettability is frequently correlated with ice adhesion strength. However, these established correlations are limited to high ice adhesion and become invalid when the ice adhesion strength is low. Here we carried out an experimental study to explore the relationships between low ice adhesion strength and room temperature surface pr...

Reference ice accretion experiments are reproduced numerically using the simulation framework PoliMIce to investigate solid blockage effects and wall-model boundary layer interaction at the wall-model juncture. The open-source OpenFOAM software is applied to the computation of the aerodynamic flow-field and of the trajectories of water droplets. The thickness of the iced layer is then determine...

The surface properties of poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) layers screen printed onto silicon wafers were studied after oxygen and ammonia plasma treatments and subsequent grafting of poly(ethylene -alt-maleic anhydride) (PEMA) using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), roughness analysis, and contact angle and electrokinetic measurements. In the case of oxygen-plasma-treated PDMS, a hydrophil...
متن کاملAn Investigation of Laboratory-Grown “Ice Spikes”
We have investigated the formation of 10-50 mm long “ice spikes” that sometimes appear on the free surface of water when it solidifies. By freezing water under different conditions, we measured the probability of ice spike formation as a function of: 1) the air temperature in the freezing chamber, 2) air motion in the freezing chamber (which promotes evaporative cooling), 3) the quantity of dis...
متن کاملFriction and solid-solid adhesion on complex metallic alloys
The discovery in 1987 of stable quasicrystals in the Al-Cu-Fe system was soon exploited to patent specific coatings that showed reduced friction in ambient air against hard antagonists. Henceforth, it was possible to develop a number of applications, potential or commercially exploited to date, that will be alluded to in this topical review. A deeper understanding of the characteristics of comp...
